Family Sponsorship Pathways

What Is This Program?

Family-based immigration unites U.S. citizens and, in some categories, lawful permanent residents with their relatives. MapleVista supports three key pathways: Spousal (CR-1 / IR-1), Parental (IR-5), and Sibling (F4). Each pathway has its own eligibility rules, waiting times, and documentation. The three sub-sections below describe each one.

Eligibility Criteria

Spousal Sponsorship (CR-1 / IR-1)

Unites a U.S. citizen with a foreign spouse. The CR-1 (conditional) category applies where the marriage is less than two years old at admission; the IR-1 applies for marriages of two years or more. Spouses of lawful permanent residents are handled in a different category (F2A). Evidence of a bona fide marriage is required.

Parental Sponsorship (IR-5)

Available to adult U.S. citizens (age 21 or older) sponsoring their parents. Parents are immediate relatives, so there is no annual numerical cap. A separate petition is filed for each parent.

Sibling Sponsorship (F4 Preference)

U.S. citizens (age 21 or older) may sponsor brothers and sisters. The F4 category is subject to annual numerical limits and a visa-bulletin queue, so waiting times can be long.

The U.S. citizen files Form I-130 with proof of the relationship.

Parental Sponsorship

01

Separate I-130 Filings

The U.S. citizen files a separate Form I-130 for each parent.

02

Choose consular processing abroad or adjustment of status in the U.S., depending on the parent's situation.

05
